Read our Annual Report and Financial Statements
for the year ended 31st December 2022

Our Annual Report and Financial Statements for the year ended 2022 have been published and filed with the Charity Commission. Do take a look at them. They are on our website. The report in particular is full of interesting information about what we’ve done in the past year to preserve and protect our beautiful estuary. But more than this, we cover what plans there are for the future and how we are going to tackle the challenges ahead.

Some key highlights:

  • The East Suffolk Water Management Board (ESWMB) has received confirmation that the Environment Agency (EA) will contribute a substantial £11.1 million towards improving our flood defences in the Upper Estuary. This amazing news has meant that planning, design and surveys of the work is going on right now.

  • The EA has also committed £99,000 to support the production of an application for flood defence grants in the Lower Estuary. Crafting this complex and expensive document will likely require additional funding beyond the EA's award, and the Trust is committed to making up the shortfall.

  • The ESWMB has estimated a funding gap of approximately £20 million between the flood defence grant and the total project cost. Our report provides insights into our strategy for covering this gap and the necessary actions to achieve our goals.

  • It's worth noting that the Trust currently maintains cash reserves exceeding £700,000.

Christmas Cards

The Aldeburgh Bookshop has once again organised the production of two beautiful Christmas cards for you to purchase. Generously contributed by talented artists Lily Leaver and Karen Lear, these cards will be available in packs of 6 for £6 at The Aldeburgh Bookshop, O&C Butcher, and Snape Maltings.

The Trustees remain deeply appreciative of the unwavering support and fundraising efforts from the community, particularly through the sale of these Christmas cards.

Should you wish to offer The Alde & Ore Estuary Trust a Christmas gift, you can donate online at www.aoetrust.org.

Flotilla, July 2024

Looking ahead to the coming year, we are exploring the potential of a third Aldeburgh to Orford flotilla in the latter half of July 2024.

You can swim, paddleboard, kayak, or row to raise funds to upgrade and maintain the river walls. In 2022, this event helped us raise over £46,000. Keep an eye out for our newsletter in January, which will provide further details.

Thank you again for your continued support,
