Latest News on Our Flood Defence Upgrades
We are pleased to share the latest developments from the ESWMB on the vital flood defence upgrades across the Alde and Ore Estuary. The update can be found below.
Thanks to your continued support and the funding already secured, detailed designs for the Upper Estuary at Snape Maltings (FC06) and Snape Village (FC07) are now complete, allowing the construction process to move forward.
In June, ESWMB submitted a detailed Flood Risk Activity Permit application to the Environment Agency. This is a key approval needed before construction can begin, and the review process may take up to six months.
The tendering process for FC06 is now underway, due to close in mid-August. Subject to regulatory approvals, construction on FC06 and FC07 will begin in 2026.
The focus now shifts to the remaining flood cells in Aldeburgh, Iken and the flood cells of the Lower Estuary. We are actively working on a strategic funding plan for the remaining flood cells.
We remain firmly committed to protecting the entire estuary from Snape to the sea. With your help, we will make it happen. Whether through donations, volunteering, community engagement, or simply helping to raise awareness, your support continues to be invaluable.

DEFRA consultation:
Reforming our approach to floods funding
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs consulted on plans to reform how flood and coastal erosion projects are funded, aiming to simplify the process, speed up delivery, and better respond to growing climate risks. Proposals include a new approach to funding and prioritising flood resilience projects.
The Trust responded to DEFRA’s consultation as the proposals on how projects are funded and prioritised will directly impact future resilience for our estuary communities.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support,
